EMEKUKU COMMUNITY MARKS 100 YEARS OF CATHOLICISM IN OWERRI NIGERIA

THE entire Catholic community will today celebrate the Centenary of the advent of the Roman Catholic faith to the old Owerri Ecclesiastic Province.

White missionaries from Portugal, led by Rev. Fr. Ferah, in 1912, stepped into the royal family of Eze Ejeshi Amadi-Obi in Ezedibia, Emekuku, establishing a temporary church in the family.

The church was later moved quite close-by to where it is today, Mount Camel, Emekuku.

A successor-ruler, Eze Kele Gogo Amadi Obi later facilitated the erection of the permanent site of the church in Emekuku.

Briefing The Guardian at the weekend in Owerri, a community leader in Ezedibia, Emekuku, and a staffer of the State Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Ejeshi Obi, noted that to mark the event, the Archbishop of Owerri Ecclesiastic Province, Dr. Anthony J. V. Obinna, would celebrate Mass in the Eze Obi Compound, where the missionaries first officiated Mass in 1912.

Ejeshi Obi said Dr. Obinna would formally unveil a Divine Pilgrim site-Ihu Father- after Mass.
It was gathered that representatives from Catholic Dioceses in the South -east and South-south geo- political zone, as well as government officials, would attend the event.
